Marketing in Focus 2017

It has only been one day since hosting Marketing in Focus 2017, but I still cannot begin to amount the gratitude I have to been a part of such a wonderful OC team and club, the SFU Student Marketing Association (SMA). I had the opportunity to work with talented executives who are passionate about creativity, innovation, and of course, marketing. Over time, we got to see the development of each and every one of us – how we all got together to plan an amazing event for the students and faculty of SFU and the Beedie School of Business.

The past six months of my life have taught me valuable lessons and tremendous growth as a designer. Seeing a simple idea and a catchphrase, “What inspires you?”, come to reality got me truly in awe. From print material such as event day pamphlets to digital collateral on SMA’s social media outlets, I had students and colleagues telling me how much this year’s theme influenced them, and how much willpower I had to execute it all. It was very warming to hear how many attendees were looking forward to next year's event too.

What inspired me the most during Marketing in Focus were the speakers who came out to our event. Each of them had their own story to tell – what got them interested in the world of marketing and what they did to get to where are they now. What challenges have they faced in their career, and what has been the most rewarding aspect they have gotten out of this industry.

If there was one thing I have learned out of this entire experience, it would definitely be to join a group or organization that they feel hesitant about. SMA was the very first club I joined here upon attending SFU, and it has undoubtedly been one of the best decisions I have made during my undergrad so far. From meeting the OC team for the very first time at JOEY’s in Coquitlam, to having weekly meetings every Wednesday evenings at WMC 3251, I feel beloved having joined the SMAily.

Cheers,
